Do you want Monty to win the U.S. Open? Vote now, and post your comments below.
I think it would be a fitting highlight to a great career. His behavior is no better or worse than many who live in the public eye.
I certainly would be happy for him if he did. I remember when Monty was at the top of his game to win Loch Lomond and around that time - some of the rounds he played was just like watching perfection. I mean he is just so much much more talented than overachievers like Shaun Micheel or Ben Curtis. He is the best player to have never won a major but he has won the order of merit 7 times consecutively...
If he can perform as he did today, he can win it. His past performance have shown he can play the Open, just hasn't had 4 rounds at once.
Monty is contentious with the fans. His victory would not be popular.
Take what im going to take here with a pinch of salt cos it sure isn't going to be popular...lol
Ive gone to the British Open most years since my first time when Justin Leonard won in Troon. Now every year I go to these events there always seems to be an overexcited american fan around doing inappropriate things such as shout "get in the hole" as someone is halfway in their downstroke teeing off with a driver on a long par 5, whilst the people from here looking at each other like

eh !
Now put that into the ryder cup and you can magnify this obnoxious behaviour 10 fold as fans deliberately go out their way. Everytime the ryder cup is held in america there is a risk of it turning into a joke. When its held here everyone is very respectful to the players with few or no incidents of unacceptable behaviour by the fans.
Now I know not all american fans are like this but they do seem to bring along one or two that are. Theres nothing wrong with the enthusiasm though - which should be encouraged but it ain't ice hockey...lol
Also please remember my girlfriend is american so this is not a dig at america - just the individuals which act like idiots....
Yoda - I'm sticking to my call from the 1st green action we watched at the Barclay's - that guy could win it
It's a tough call. At Bethpage in 2002, Golf Digest handed out 25,000 pins that said, "Be Nice to Monty!"(And we were. Very nice.) And wasn't he the same guy that once wanted the blimp moved because it was annoying him?
Still, I like his unorthodox swing, and like the man, from what I know about him. It would be a fitting cap to one of the best Ryder Cup players I've ever seen.

Where have I heard a quote like this before? Is this Paul Casey?
You should be more worried about your country's soccer fans and less worried about American golf fans.
Golf has changed for the better and it is a game of the masses now. Take the stick out of your arse and enjoy the show.
Matthew man....
I don't know enough to call it either way (for or against the American fans)....
But I think you have a bit of a point actually...
The crowds seem to be different at the Phoenix Open (errr w/e it's called now) vs. some tourney in Scotland or something.
Different type of fans.
I think it's a fair call.
I didn't vote....but I'm not rooting for Monty, but not because of anything he has said to fans in the past. Actually, I had been a fan of Monty's until a couple of rules issues in the past few years. There was the one where he insisted he didn't touch the ball with his putter, although video seemed to indicate he did... I could let that slide if he hadn't had some 'confusion' over where his ball had been in a bunker when play was halted, several tournaments later. In that one, play was halted, he had a terrible (feet perhaps out, ball in)lie in a bunker. He picked up his ball without marking and the following day replaced it in ... surprise! a rather nice lie. It could be coincidence... but ya' know what..I wouldn't be playing Monty for money unless I was friends with the guy who was caddying for him...and Monty wasn't. So I can't root for him anymore.

Actually he did mark his ball but the markers were removed by the time he returned to the course the next morning.
Alex
In one way or another it'll pay off.
Should he win it'd be a very emotional victory. I like to see that and I think it'd instantly make Monty a better contributor to the game.
But not as much as I once wanted Greg Norman to win the Masters. It was good for Larry Mize, but a
well deserved Shark win would have been better for golf.
Colin Montgomery in Saturday's third round:
Five over after four...
Five over after eighteen.
And only three off the lead.
Very brave.

Great third round. I think anybody who is at +6 or better is still in it(watch out for Vijay!). The course reminds me so much of Bethpage Black, except with more undulating greens. I play the Black occasionally, and I don't know how the members at the Foot can stand it. Every time I play it, I want to run over my clubs in the parking lot

.
Should be a fantastic final round tomorrow!

That is a very unfair statement. The putting indident was very contentious and was both "proved" and "disproved "by British TV.The Malaysia issue was officiated by the PGA.Monty is not a cheat.
The way Monty lost that major was so brutal. Really hated to see him lose that way. I was freaking out after he made that bomb and for it to all blow up in his face on 18. I think just about everyone here could have at least made a bogey from 173 in the fairway, but to get into a playoff for the US Open, when we think we need a birdie, seems the numbers would get a lot smaller!
