An example of a swinger hitting a ball

I would like to see a video of a swinger hitting a ball and have a position by position breakdown like was done with the Ted Forte hitting sequence.

Actually mikestloc is now on the site and i think he's a swinger. There's footage of him on Brian's site and he has a great swing. He might be pivot controlled hands tho, Mike?

Steve Ferguson is a long-time PGA Professional and TGM Authorized Instructor who hangs his hat at the Marietta Golf Center. He is also as pure a Swinger as you will ever see. I'll prevail upon him next week to demonstrate his Total Motion for my video camera. We'll then study his action, including the nine Components that clearly differentiate his Stroke from that of the Hitter.

That would be great. I finally got out to play Saturday. It wasn't pretty!
I played the first 16 holes trying to be a hitter. I switched to swinging on 17 and 18 and hit the ball very well.
I wish I could do the lesson over again and work on swinging a little.

Hi Steve,

In our pre-lesson discussion, you identified yourself as a Hitter, a fact that you soon confirmed on the Lesson Tee. Nevertheless, most of the work we did was 'generic' and did not differentiate between Hitting and Swinging. Grip, Stance, Posture, Head position and, of course, the Flat Left Wrist remain the same for both.

Also, we did not use the Hitter's Angle of Approach procedure and the steeper Backstroke Plane it requires. Instead, we focused on the same Turned Shoulder Plane and 10-5-A Plane Line as the Swinger, both for Right Forearm Tracing and for the Delivery Path. The only real differences then to convert to Swinging will be to use Drag Loading (instead of Drive Loading) and Left Wrist Throwout in Release instead of Right Arm Drive-Out.

Given that you have played virtually no golf for months, my guess is that your major problem was more Timing and Execution than Mechanical. And almost always, the bad guy is Overacceleration and its inevitable Clubhead Throwaway. When you went to Swinging, not only did you give yourself more time to allow the Stroke to happen, but also, you gave Centrifugal Force the opportunity to do a lot of the work for you.

Homer Kelley felt it was important for the Hitter to learn to Swing. That way, when he didn't feel like concentrating on all the Hitter's details or was just plain tired, he could switch to Swinging and often immediately set things right. It looks like you may have had just such an experience.

Yoda is right. Key positions are used for both swinging and hitting. So become a MASTER of grip, posture, head position, flat left wrist, stance. Become a MASTER of these and then you can choose to do whatever you like depending on what a shot calls for.( That is when you can really start being a shot artist) be patient and stay the course and you will hit the best golf shots of your life.

Yoda, I did not give you a complete history before our lesson. I had been a pivot type swinger since I started playing regularly a few years ago. I used the turning of my torso to power my swing. About half way through the lesson I think I might have started talking about how I needed to feel the connection of my upper arm to my chest in my swing but we joked about exorcising the demon and never went back.
Before my trip to see you I was reading the posts on this site and GEA about the magic of the right forearm and hitting the ball using right arm thrust. I was trying to implement this on my own and what you saw was my progress toward that.
When it dries out enough to get to the range I intend to give hitting vs: swinging a good test.

There is also plenty to gain by learning Right Forearm Pickup.

Like Don Villavaso always says: "You need to play AND practice."

In this case--BOTH ways---hitting and swinging.

Some golfers find Right Forearm Pickup too restrictive. Making a good SPINE CENTERED pivot can work wonders for some players. Try IT on the range and on the course.

Bottom line: Use whatever produces the BEST results on the course!

How is RFP restrictive??? I'm getting a bigger turn than ever...I can really crank it and feel that my right shoulder and all down the right side of my back can "turn no more." I've had great results using it.

RFP is restrictive to SOME golfers (who obviously don't do it 'right').

Having said that, it is TAUGHT as a 'suggestion' amd like many suggestions, it doesn't work for everyboday.

I use right forearm takeaway per 12-3-0-17 in addition to extensor action takeaway per 10-19-0 with snap loading....I tell ya....when ever I read the phrase "Right Forearm Pickup" I get the heebie geebies....

An alternative to right forearm takeaway is.....standard hip action.....which gives you an "Angled Delivery Path" instead of a straight line path....

I'll compromise.....it works for me with full sweep loading but not with an extensor action takeway....it's so easy to forget about the "back" dimension of the three dimenisonal takeaway per the last paragraph of page 26.
