hello to all and Happy Holidays

my question regards the downswing,can a right handed golfer "pull" from the top with the- RIGHT HAND. might be a silly question, but since i don't know i will ask.

Hello again. I'm not qualified to give you an answer, but my guess is no. There is no such thing as a silly question. And somebody will answer this with the necessary authority.

It's an excellent question, and one I have often wondered about. cause it seems to me the first move down has to be a pull given the position of the club to the right arm. cant really push something behind you.

plus when the club is on the followthrough the left arm isn't really pulling anymore is it, once the club passed?

Maybe the "left arm is always pulling and right always pushing" isn't a literal thing?

Your question is carefully worded I believe so Ill try to answer it appropriately given Homers definition of things.

You say "pull" with the "right hand" and "from the top". Quick answer assuming you are referring to Total Motion, with a Delayed Release for power, would be no.

Long answer: When you say "pull" you take us to Drag Loading, Swinging, Longitudinal Acceleration as opposed to the Push of Hitting, Radial Acceleration. You say "with the Right Hand" , which is possible in combo with Drag Loading , Swinging , Pulling ........the not so often discussed Right Arm Swinging. Of which there are quite a few practitioners out there I believe, Retief Goosen for one.

When you say "from top" .........now we're in a grey area where maybe you mean it literally or maybe you dont. I dunno. Normally for the Drag Loader in the ideal ,for Total Motion full power he uses the Downswing Sequence 6-M-1, where he "swings from the feet" , ground up. He Slides Left which loads his left foot, then the Sequence moves up to the Knees, then the turning Left Hip which pulls the Right Shoulder down plane (ideally) which pushes the Left Shoulder around and up which pulls the Left ARm which pulls the Hand to grip attachment. So do you mean that when you say "pull from the top" with the Right Hand?

Or do you mean quite literally your Right Hand, on its own more or less pulls the club down? This latter situation would be accompanied by an associated pulling away from the Shoulders by the right arm as well. Release. Immediate Release in Startdown. Not something you'd do for power but rather for the added height to the trajectory you'd get. Common around the green or for going over some trees or something.....but most often with shorter clubs , less than full power. This is the world of Full Sweep Release.

And Full Sweep Release , Right Arm Swinging is out there, on tour even.

I am trying to find what is easiest for me and here is my feeling.When Kevin and a few of his friends worked with Lynn I remember Kevin saying something like, paraphrase here- "when Lynn spoke to me he did in T.G.M.terms, when to friends he spoke differently. I am "differently" altho working to understand more each day. I don't know what i meant except to say it feels easier for me to pull from the top with my right hand. I wish i could be more specific but lack of knowledge does not permit at this time. Once again I appreciate your insights and with respect after reading your answer 3 or 4times

Like all things golf and Homer its difficult. Difficult for you to articulate what you're doing and difficult for all of us to understand Homers definitions of things. You saying you like to pull from the top with your right hand .......well that sounds to me like you're a high handicapper ....no offence. But you could be a scratch......thats the way it goes with words and descriptions and different definitions of things.

Maybe I overcomplicated things......so if your handicap is over 10 say....let your Pivot pull your Hands down in Startdown. Or suffer the consequences of "hitting from the top". Its the move that separates the good golfer from the not so good.

Wait op85, I assumed you were right handed maybe Im wrong.......are you a left handed golfer by chance? If so, everything is different. Everything. If not come on back and we'll talk some more trying to identify exactly what it you feel , which often isnt real so to speak.

In my mind use what ever can get you to consistent impact - a straight plane line and square club face should be your goal. There are so many ways to get there.

Hi MB, Overpar85, everyone. TGM does not support the idea of a "square" club face at separation since the ball leaves the " leading edge of the club face" at right angles (2-D-0-3) unless you are trying to shape a shot with a purpose as if you were shooting around a tree, for example.

Be careful about the "consistent" concept. I have spent hundreds of hours hitting the same shots at the range and my muscles and timing of my hands became "trained" for that particular time and place. You can essentially fool yourself with a driving range.

I would suggest seeing Lynn or, if he's busy, ask him who he would recommend near you or near him. Get a tape and an observer with a trained eye. I know a guy if you live in the Midwest in MN after you see Lynn.

OB Left and Daryl are both very bright and thoughtful as are many other senior posters here. If you go to "Search" and look up the elements of your questions, you will learn a great deal about a TGM view of the world.

I have made hundreds of mistakes since last March and my hcp. went from a GHIN 21 to a GHIN 10.1 and I have recorded most of those mistakes in my thread and how I went past them. if I'd seen Lynn, back in June or August last year, I'd be a single-digit hcp.

Invest in how good a golfer you can be and see Lynn. PM any of us if you wish details. Lynn, himself seems like a straight-shooter who deals with people with grace and intelligence. You can PM Lynn and speak with him at any point.
